Haugesund Søndagsskole
I. DE FØRSTE ÅR
Søndagsskolen i Haugesund regner 1871 som startåret. De som gikk i spissen for dette tiltaket var fru bakermester Marie Malmin og lærer, senere skolestyrer Lars T. Kyvig samt kemner Ths. V. Manger. Bakermester Malmins hjem var et åpent og gjestfritt hjem for de troende ved strandstedet. Ofte kom misjonselever fra Stavanger hit på besøk og da var det stor høytid i hjemmet. Barna lå også fru Malmin varmt på hjertet. Tidlig - allerede i 1860 årene tok hun til å samle dem i sitt hjem der hun leste av Guds ord og små kristelige fortellinger for dem. Og barneflokken økte så stuene ble for små og en dag kom skolestyrer Kyvig og ba henne begynne søndagsskole i almue-skolen. Baker Malmin var også en tid søndagsskolelærer. Skolestyrer Kyvig (1831-1917) var en varmhjertet kristen personlighet som med usvikelig kjærlighet ofret seg for de oppgaver Gud la på ham. Han var en årrekke med i Israelsmisjonen og annet misjonsarbeid.
Fru Malmin, Kyvig og Th. V. Manger (1832-1915) tok så fatt i juli 1871 i Almueskolens lokaler det nåværende Politikammer. Hvor mange elever som gikk i søndagsskolen det første året har vi ingen sikre opplysninger om - heller ikke hvor mange lærere og lærerinner som var med i arbeidet. Forhandlingsprotokollen fra 1871-1894 er dessverre ved søndagsskolens overflytting fra Almueskolen på Bytunet til Breidablik kommet bort. Vi kan si med sikkerhet: Lærer Th. V. Manger ble valgt til formann. Ellers var nok fru Malmin og lærer - senere skolestyrer L. Kyvig og Manger med som lærere. I et privatbrev fra fru Malmin til Peter Hærem datert Haugesund 15. januar 1871 - går det fram at det vinteren 1871 gikk en vekkelse over strandstedet. Hun skriver bl. a.: Vi kan altså slå fast at søndagsskolen i Haugesund er en frukt av vekkelse og nytt åndelig liv. Arbeidet med barna ble tatt opp av menn og kvinner med kjærlighet til dem og til Guds rike. Søndagsskolen ble ikke knyttet til noen spesiell organisasjon i disse grunnleggende år. Visstnok ble det tidligere valgt en med formann og 4 styremedlemmer, men den sto uavhengig og fri i forhold til den øvrige kristelige virksomhet i byen. 1 1875 gikk det 570 elever i almueskolen og det er sannsynlig at elevantallet i søndagsskolen i de første 20 år var mellom 100 og 150. Ti lærere og lærerinner må vi nok regne med sto i tjenesten.
II. ORDNING AV SØNDAGSSKOLEN
Søndagsskolen ble holdt søndag formiddag før gudstjenesten i Timen begynte med sang - deretter fulgte en kort gjennomgåelse av dagens evangelium og deretter opplesning av kristelige fortellinger. Tidlig tok man og til å arrangere juletrefester for barn - den første julen 1872 ettersom det framgår av en annonse i Karmsundsposten. Barnegudstjenester i jule-helgen som regel 2. juledag var nok vanlig i disse årene før århundreskiftet. Tekstgjennomgåelse for søndagsskolens arbeidere ble holdt hver fredag av pastor Koren og formannen, kemner Manger. Undertiden også andre dager i uken har vært nyttet. skriver Kyvig i 1906:
Kemner Th. V. Manger sto som formann fra 1871 til 1877 da skolestyrer Lars T. Kyvig ble valgt som formann. Hans første formannsperiode var fra 1877-1895.
Som styremedlemmer var disse med i 1895: Farver Steen, kemner Manger, K. O. Kolstø og pers. kap. Koren. Skolen omfattet i 1895 6 gutte- og 8 pikeklasser. Hver klasse skulle så vidt mulig ikke ha over 20 elever - maksimum 25.
Etter dette må elevantallet i 1895 ha vært mellom 280 og 380.
Gutteklassene:
Lærere i a klassen: Sandvig, Fastingsen og Lars Nilsen. Lærere i b klassen: Vormedal, Malmin og Jakob Pedersen. Lærere i c klassen: O. Steensnæs, Ommund Hauge og Sv. Jacobsen. Lærere i d klassen: Borseth, Bredal og Ask. Lærere i e klassen: Halvor Wig, Knut Hegland, Mathias Olsen. - - i alt 9 eksemplarer. [1]
